【No Reservation Needed】

✅ Most trains in Switzerland, Germany, and the United Kingdom do not require or even allow seat reservations.

✅ When traveling with a rail pass, you can sit in any available unreserved seat (First Class pass holders may also sit in Second Class seats if desired).

From a country perspective, most trains in France, Italy, and Spain require mandatory reservations. From a train type perspective, high-speed trains like TGV, Thalys, Eurostar, and Trenitalia, as well as sleeper trains and most scenic trains, require reservations.

【Why Some Trains Require Seat Reservations】

💺 For comfort and safety: No standing tickets are allowed on certain trains, especially high-speed services.

💺 High demand routes: Trains such as the Glacier Express in Switzerland or Trenitalia services in Italy often sell out.

💺 Border and security regulations: Some international trains, like Eurostar (UK–France) or TGV (France–Spain), require passenger lists for security and border control.

💺 Enhanced onboard services: Night trains and scenic trains offer added services such as beds, dining, or panoramic carriages — the reservation fee covers these extras.

💺 To ensure seat availability for local travelers: For instance, Eurostar limits rail pass use to prevent over-occupation by tourists, ensuring seats remain available for local passengers.

Discounts range from 5% to 50%, covering hotels, attractions, mountain railways, ferries (including night ferries), lockers, buses, photo printing, and more.

🇩🇪 In Germany, S-Bahn (commuter trains) are included in the rail pass — available in cities like Munich, Berlin, Cologne, and Frankfurt.
However, U-Bahn (metro/subway) is not included.

🇬🇷 In Greece, ferry passes cover routes operated by Superfast Ferries, Blue Star Ferries, and Hellenic Seaways. Seat reservations are required but free of charge.

⛴️ Around Interlaken, boat services on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz are included in the Swiss rail pass.

🚌 City buses are not included, nor are Switzerland’s PostBuses.

Eurail is a marketing and distribution platform jointly established by multiple European railway companies — it does not operate trains itself. When travelers use a Eurail Pass, each train company records the journey, and Eurail consolidates these records to distribute revenue proportionally among the rail operators that actually provide the transport service. 

Eurail continuously updates its age categories to reflect global travel trends. Before 2017, the Youth Pass was available to travelers under 27 years old. Before 2010, there was no Senior Pass at all. All age eligibility is determined based on the first day of pass use, not the date of purchase.
