European train tickets are divided into "tickets" and "reservations." Holding a rail pass is considered equivalent to holding a "ticket." When making a reservation, different trains and types are categorized as: mandatory reservation, recommended reservation, and no reservation required. Most trains and routes in Germany do not require reservations. With a rail pass, if there are sudden schedule changes or train delays, you can directly take other trains or schedules without any issues.
Take this 15% off promotion as an example: a 3-day first-class rail pass costs €235, which comes down to a daily price of approximately €235/3 = €78.
Sales records show that for high-speed trains traveling over 1.5 hours, the first-class ticket price usually exceeds €80 per trip.
This means that if your itinerary includes three or more train rides over 1.5 hours within three days, it’s worth getting the rail pass.
Of course, you can also switch to a rail pass if your total ticket cost exceeds €235. However, using the daily price as a basis to calculate the "cost per trip" is often more convenient!
The German train pass is applicable to the routes operated by the national railway company DB. It can be used on German railways unlimited times within the validity period of the pass. The train pass price does not include reservation, meal and sleeper reservation fees. You can find out which trains are available and whether you need to reserve a seat in the Rail Planner app.
