Today, you are invited to slow down. Feel the soft sand beneath your feet, breathe in the fresh sea breeze, or lose yourself in the hidden treasures of the historic center’s narrow alleys. As evening falls, settle into a cozy local restaurant and savor a dish of freshly caught fish paired with local white wine, setting a relaxed and captivating tone for the magnificent hiking adventure ahead.

Day 5 Journey to the Maritime Capital — Genova / Overnight in Genova
Expand

Bid farewell to Cinque Terre as we journey by train to Genoa, the capital of Liguria (approx. 2-hour ride).

Once a maritime superpower that dominated the Mediterranean, Genoa (Genova) is a city of contrasts. It weaves together a labyrinth of ancient alleys, majestic Baroque palaces, and Italy's most expansive seaport. Compared to the vibrant energy of Cinque Terre, Genoa offers a refined elegance and a deep sense of historical heritage.

  • The Dominance of a Maritime Republic : Once a rival to Venice and the "Master of the Mediterranean," Genoa is the proud birthplace of Christopher Columbus. You can still find the ruins of his childhood home at the edge of the Old Town.
  • The Palazzi dei Rolli System : A unique chapter in Genoese history. In the absence of a king, the Republic established a system where noble families were chosen by "lottery" to host visiting heads of state in their private mansions. These prestigious residences are known as the Rolli Palaces.
  • The Culinary Soul : Beyond its world-famous Pesto, the Focaccia is a must-try local staple. Locals even embrace the tradition of dipping fresh Focaccia into their morning cappuccino.
Genova

The Peak of Maritime Glory: La Superba As Italy’s premier gateway to the sea, Genoa’s legacy is one of ocean conquest. From its grand docks to the aristocratic palaces on the hills, the city radiates the enduring ambition and power of a true maritime superpower. A maritime titan that once rivaled Venice, Genoa ruled the seas with its formidable fleet and financial empire. As the birthplace of Columbus and the "Banker of Europe," it remains a living monument to global power.

Cattedrale di San Lorenzo

As the most prominent cathedral in Genoa, it boasts a truly unique and striking exterior.

The black-and-white striped marble facade is a signature style of the Liguria region. Inside, you will find a replica of an unexploded shell that crashed into the cathedral during World War II—a fascinating piece of history that adds to the church's storied past.

Porto Antico

This revitalized area, redesigned by the world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, is the premier destination to experience the vibrant energy of the "Maritime Capital."

  • Acquario di Genova (Genoa Aquarium) : Located right on the waterfront, this is one of the largest and most spectacular aquariums in Europe.
  • Bigo Panoramic Lift : Inspired by the design of traditional harbor cranes, this unique elevator whisks you into the air, rotating 360 degrees to offer a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire harbor.

Spianata Castelletto

If you wish to create unforgettable memories in the evening, this is the place to be.

Known as the "Balcony of Genoa," this spot offers a breathtaking view where the harbor, the sea, and the church bell towers blend seamlessly into one. It is, without a doubt, the premier location for sunset photography. To reach this vista, simply take the vintage public elevator (Ascensore) near Piazza De Ferrari for a direct ascent.

Day 6 Deep Dive into Genoa — From Noble Palaces to Romantic Sunsets / Overnight in Genova
Expand

Today, we journey into the "soul" of Genoa, exploring everything from the opulent interiors of aristocratic palaces to a local-favorite fishing village at sunset.

The true magic of this city isn't found in wide-open vistas, but in the secrets hidden within its "Caruggi" (ancient alleys). It’s the way the morning sun filters through narrow limestone walls, the scent of fresh basil and warm focaccia wafting through the air, and the effortless grace with which the city balances aristocratic splendor with everyday charm.

Today, we slow down. We will wander through golden galleries, relive the legends of the Mediterranean, and finally, find ourselves in a colorful seaside sanctuary to bid a poetic farewell to "La Superba."

Musei di Strada Nuova (The Red, White, and Tursi Palaces)

Wander through the three most powerful museums on Via Garibaldi. Here, you can admire masterpieces by Van Dyck and ascend to the rooftop terrace of Palazzo Rosso for a breathtaking view of the Old Town’s labyrinth of terracotta roofs.

Galata Museo del Mare (Maritime Museum)

Step into the Mediterranean’s largest maritime museum. Explore a full-scale, 1:1 replica of a 17th-century galley and feel the awe-inspiring power of a former maritime empire.

Sottoripa Arcade Delicacies: Beneath the ancient arches across from the harbor, indulge in local street food like a cone of freshly fried seafood (Fritto Misto) or warm, oven-fresh Focaccia.Galata Museo del Mare (Maritime Museum).

Boccadasse

A short bus ride or a scenic coastal stroll leads you to this hidden gem on the edge of the city. With pastel-colored houses that rival the charm of Cinque Terre, enjoying a gelato on the pebbled beach while the sunset paints the sea gold is the perfect finale to your Genoa adventure.

During the walk, you only need to carry personal essentials, a water bottle, and some light snacks to keep your energy up. All other luggage will be transported for you, so you can enjoy the journey light and carefree.

Shoe Tips

A pair of comfortable, well-fitting shoes is essential! Avoid buying shoes right before your trip, as new shoes usually need time to break in. We recommend purchasing them at least 30 days in advance and wearing them on several short walks to get them ready. If you’re walking in summer, skip boots and choose lightweight, breathable, and comfortable shoes for the best experience.

Clothing Tips

Skip jeans—they’re too hot in summer and not warm enough in winter. Go for breathable, waterproof pants and tops. In summer, shorts are fine; in winter, bring thermal layers, hats, and gloves. Layer smartly, but don’t overpack jackets. Socks matter: choose thick, moisture-wicking socks—avoid cotton to prevent blisters.

Rain Gear

You’ll likely encounter some rain, so bring a compact umbrella and a waterproof jacket for light showers. We also recommend a long raincoat that covers both you and your backpack to keep everything dry.
