Detailed Itinerary
Train Overview
El Expreso de La Robla is a comfortable, air-conditioned vintage train that winds through the picturesque countryside and coastline of northern Spain. It offers a chance to fully experience the tradition and charm of León’s luxury train journeys. This route combines the nostalgic atmosphere of classic rail travel with the convenience of modern amenities.
Each day begins with a buffet breakfast on board the train, after which a bus and guide will meet you at each destination to accompany you through charming towns and historic sites, immersing you in the rich cultural heritage and history of the region.
Delicious lunches are served at different local restaurants along the route. In the evenings, the train stops at various stations, allowing passengers to enjoy local cuisine and nightlife, then return to the train for a peaceful and comfortable night’s sleep.
Relax on the comfortable train as you explore the rugged, mountainous northern coast of Spain, winding through spectacular and captivating scenery along the way.
Route Map
León - Bilbao
Day1 León – Cistierna
Meeting time and place: 3:00 PM at La Concordia train station (Renfe) in Bilbao, Spain.
Today, we will meet between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM at the Feve train station in León. We will then take a minibus to San Feliz to board the La Robla train.
Our journey will take us through the spectacular Hoces de Vegacervera, followed by a visit to the impressive stalactite caves of La Cueva de Valporquero, including the remarkable Grand Roundabout, a विशाल underground chamber of approximately 100,000 cubic meters.
Finally, we will return to the train and continue to Cistierna, where we will visit the Railway Museum, enjoy dinner, and stay overnight.
Day2 Cistierna – Espinosa de Los Monteros
We will enjoy breakfast on board the luxury train as it takes us to Guardo in Palencia. From there, we will travel by bus to the Roman Villa of La Olmeda, where we will admire its rich collection of mosaic art. We will then continue to Carrión de los Condes and Frómista to explore Romanesque art and enjoy lunch.
After visiting the impressive Church of San Martín and the Canal de Castilla, we will return to the train and continue to Sotoscueva. From there, we will head to the beautiful village of Espinosa de los Monteros in the Las Merindades region of Burgos for dinner, and stay overnight in Espinosa.
Day3 Espinosa de Los Monteros – Bilbao
Enjoy breakfast on board while taking in the incredible views of the Mena Valley as we travel toward Bilbao. Upon arrival, we will visit the renowned Guggenheim Museum, and the tour will conclude at 2:00 PM.
Bilbao - León
Day 1: Bilbao – Espinosa de los Monteros
Meeting point: 15:00 at Renfe’s La Concordia Station in Bilbao.
In the afternoon, between 15:00 and 16:00, we will meet at La Concordia Station in Bilbao. This unique modernist building, constructed in 1902, is one of the architectural gems from the Belle Époque era in Bilbao.
At 16:00, we will board the La Robla Express and depart for Sotoscueva, where we will visit the impressive Ojo Guareña karstic complex. This vast natural formation stretches for over 100 kilometers, featuring dramatic rock walls and remarkable geological formations.
We will then continue to the charming village of Espinosa de los Monteros in the Las Merindades region, where we will enjoy dinner and stay overnight.
Day 2: Espinosa de los Monteros – Cistierna
After breakfast on board the train, we will travel towards Mataporquera. From there, we will take a bus to explore the Romanesque heritage of the Palencia region, including the historic town of Carrión de los Condes, known for its rich cultural and architectural legacy.
Next, we will visit the remarkable Roman Villa of La Olmeda, famous for its exceptional collection of Roman mosaics.
We will then return to the train and continue to Cistierna, where we will visit the local railway museum, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Cistierna – León
After breakfast on board the La Robla Express, we will travel to San Feliz. Upon arrival, we will transfer by bus to León.
There, we will explore the historic city center, including visits to the Basilica of San Isidoro and the León Cathedral.
The tour will conclude at approximately 14:00.
