Detailed Itinerary
About the Region – The Italian Dolomites
Collapse
The Italian Dolomites are located in South Tyrol / Südtirol / Alto Adige, in northern Italy. This area is part of the German-speaking region of Italy, so you’ll notice that most place names appear in both German and Italian. The itinerary mainly centers around Bolzano / Bozen, situated in the heart of the Dolomites. To the north of South Tyrol lies Austria’s North Tyrol.
South Tyrol is a truly unique region. Nestled between Austria and Switzerland, it sits between the Alps and the Mediterranean. The area is bilingual, and walking through the towns, you’ll hear both Italian and German spoken in daily life.
So, what makes the Dolomites so popular among travelers? Simply put – the landscape is extraordinary!
The Dolomites are famous for their rugged, dramatic scenery: about 18 peaks rise above 3,000 meters, with vertical cliffs, narrow gorges, and lush alpine meadows. In summer, the region is a paradise for hiking and mountain biking, while in winter, it becomes a top destination for skiing.
