Transportation Recommendations

Take a 50-minute train ride from Zurich Airport to Zug (or depart from Zurich Main Station), then transfer to a 30-minute train to Schwyz. From there, you can walk or transfer to the cogwheel railway heading to Stoos. The pass included in your itinerary also covers the cable car from Morschach to Stoos, but we highly recommend taking the cogwheel railway departing from Schwyz!

Inaugurated in 2017, this railway boasts a maximum gradient of 110% (47.7 degrees). Its innovative cylindrical cabins automatically adjust their horizontal position during ascent, ensuring passengers enjoy a comfortable ride on this thrilling engineering marvel.

Stoos is a car-free village perched on a mountain plateau at 1,300 meters above sea level, famed for the world's steepest mountain railway. Its winter tranquility and crisp air invite visitors to slow down and explore. Summer's most renowned activity is:

Stay at Stoos Lodge

The hotel also caters thoughtfully to families, offering facilities like a kids' club to ensure guests of all ages enjoy a pleasant stay. This is the only accommodation on the itinerary that does not include dinner; we recommend dining in town.

Stoos

In 2022, the Swiss Travel Pass allows free rides on this cable car. Stoos is a car-free village located on the slopes of Fronalpstock mountain. The cable car from Schwyz to Stoos took 14 years to build and overcomes the world’s steepest gradient for a mountain cable car. The four cylindrical cabins with yellow-framed exteriors are especially eye-catching. To reach the summit, you can take the cable car from Stoos up to either Fronalpstock or Klingenstock. Hiking enthusiasts can also challenge this route.

Day 2 | Winter Trails in Stoos
Expand

The Swiss Travel Pass included in the itinerary covers the Schwyz–Stoos cogwheel railway and the Morschach–Stoos gondola lift, but excludes the Fronalpstock–Stoos and Klingenstock–Stoos cable car sections. Operating hours for the excluded sections may vary due to weather conditions; it is recommended to purchase tickets locally based on on-site conditions.

None of the hikes below require specialized snowshoes; slip-resistant hiking boots are sufficient. If you lack snow-appropriate hiking boots, you can prepare snow crampons to attach over your existing hiking boots.

You can also prepare snow crampons to attach over your existing hiking boots.

Stooshorn-Runde

Stoos funicular mountain station - Stooshorn - Schwyz-Stoos)

The Ringstrasse is a lively and varied route. Many places to stop for refreshments and sun terraces invite you to linger. The mountain chapel "Our Lady", which was built 300 years ago entirely of wood, is slightly elevated. With the mighty myths in the background, it becomes a postcard view. The winter hike is particularly suitable for families, as you can go by sleigh at different places next to the road. The additional loops are quieter and more leisurely. On the extension around the Stooshorn or with the excursion into the Teufböni one experiences nature pure.

Fronalpstock Panoramic Trail

The scenic path leads once around the Fonalpstock summit to reveal views of 10-plus lakes. This is like a real-life panoramic painting-in-the-round of Central Switzerland, as beautiful as only nature can create it. The experience begins with a funicular railway ride to the village of Stoos. Being virtually level, the circular path could be walked in 30 minutes. But who wants to stomp their way through this wonderful panorama?

The feast for the eyes is followed by a feast for the palate in the summit restaurant. The path is signposted and starts next to the upper terminus of the chairlift, which later returns you to the car-free mountain village of Stoos.

Stoos - Frontal

Stoos - Frontal (Stoos-Seeli - Frontal - Stoos-Seeli)

A view from above of the mountain village Stoos

The leisurely wind hike leads from Stoos-Seeli in the direction of Frontal. At the highest point you have a beautiful view over the whole mountain village of Stoos. Just behind the car-free holiday resort lies the small mountain lake. In winter its water is used to make snow on the slopes, in summer children love it because of its water play equipment. From Stoos-Seeli the hike leads in the direction of Frontal. The Teufböni moor rests under the thick blanket of snow. Before your eyes lies a panorama that stretches from the mountain village of Stoos to the Schwyz basin and on to the two myths. Finally, the circular route leads back to the village, where the cosy guest rooms invite you to warm up again.

Day 3 | Mt Rigi Kaltbad
Expand

Take the cable car down to Schwyz, then transfer to a bus for about 50 minutes to reach Vitznau. From there, board the mountain railway from Vitznau to Rigi Kaltbad (approximately 15-20 minutes), with the final stop at Rigi Kulm summit.

Watch the train glide through forests adorned with icicles and snow-covered slopes before finally reaching Rigi Kulm, the summit at 1,797 meters above sea level, embraced by ice and snow. It's recommended to drop off your luggage at the Rigi Kaltbad hotel first. Unlike the verdant summer, winter on Mount Rigi reveals a different kind of extreme beauty. The air is crisp, visibility is exceptional, and the contours of the snow-capped Alpine peaks become sharper and more defined. Mount Rigi's meticulously maintained trail network allows you to safely stroll through this snowy wonderland.

Rigi

Mount Rigi is connected by Europe’s oldest mountain railway between Arth-Goldau and Vitznau, and by an aerial cableway to Weggis. The mountain offers numerous hiking trails, making it a must-visit for travelers looking to immerse themselves in nature. Transportation : Take a boat to Vitznau, then transfer to the cogwheel railway up the mountain. For the return journey, take the aerial cableway down to Weggis, then board a boat back to Lucerne. The entire route is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Day 4 | Hiking on Mt Rigi
Expand

Classic winter hiking trails share one key feature: their surfaces are smooth, groomed, and virtually effortless. All you need is a pair of comfortable snow boots to enjoy them with ease.

First take the train to the summit at Rigi Kulm, then simply enjoy a leisurely descent of 300 meters in elevation back down to Rigi Kaltbad. Starting from the mountaintop offers exceptionally sweeping views, overlooking the entire central Swiss plateau. On clear days, you can even see Germany's Black Forest. Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug appear like two sapphires set at your feet, creating a truly spectacular scene. Route: Rigi Kulm (summit) → Staffel → Rigi Kaltbad (all downhill) Length: 4km Time: Approx. 1hr Descent: 314m Suitable year-round link

Rigi First Rundweg

Rigi Kaltbad - Rigi First - Rigi Kaltbad

The easy walking path leads you from the village square in Kaltbad to Rigi First. Along this flat and very easy trail, with its magnificent views of Lake Lucerne, the Reformed mountain church designed by Zurich architect Ernst Giesel and the typical, snow-covered conglomerate rock faces deserve special attention. From the sunny terrace of First, the idyllic upper Firstweg trail leads back to Kaltbad. A delightful circular hike without any exertion.

Känzeliweg

Visit the charming rock chapel located at the starting point of this easy walk. The level path leads through the wintry fairytale forest, past interesting rock formations, to the magnificent Känzeli viewpoint.

Rigi-Panoramaweg

Rigi Kaltbad – First – Unterstetten – Hinder Dossen – Rigi Scheidegg

Along the way, you'll discover many remnants of the former Rigi-Scheidegg railway. The route takes you across the old railway bridge, through a tunnel, past a disused passenger car, and by a water station for the steam locomotives. The views of the Alps and the Schwyz basin are magnificent. From Rigi Scheidegg, you can return to Goldau via Kräbel by cable car.

Day 5 | Aletsch Arena

Before departure, don't forget to pack your overnight bag for the next day's trip to the glacier mountain lodge. Your large luggage will be transported directly to the final day's bus stop.

First, return from Rigi to Lucerne:
Rigi Kaltbad → Weggis (cable car, 10 min) → Weggis → Luzern (Ferry 40 min)

Upon arriving in Lucerne, head to the luggage counter near Tibits Restaurant (vegetarian restaurant) on the 1st floor of the station building, one level above the train tracks. We will check our luggage directly to the final bus stop in Adelboden (the lodge is adjacent).

After storing luggage, you may choose to briefly stay in Lucerne or proceed directly to the glacier region: Lucerne → Bern (train 1 hour 30 min) → Bern → Brig (train 1 hour 6 min) → Brig → Blatten (bus 22 min) → Blatten → Belalp (cable car). All transportation is included in your travel pass.

After disembarking at the Belalp mountain station, you'll need to walk approximately 25 minutes along a scenic trail to reach the hotel.

If you're traveling light and have the energy, I also recommend stopping at Kandersteg to visit Oeschinensee. You can reach Kandersteg by train, which is included in your pass. However, the cable car ticket from Kandersteg to Oeschinensee must be purchased on-site. Be sure to check the local weather conditions before buying your ticket!
