Switzerland's Sunniest Peak, Home to an Open-Air Art Gallery

At 933 metres, Monte Brè sits right above Lugano and is known as Switzerland's sunniest mountain.

But it's more than a viewpoint — the village of Brè halfway up the mountain is itself an open-air gallery, its winding cobblestone lanes scattered with sculptures and installations by Swiss and international artists. The village is home to the Wilhelm Schmid Museum, dedicated to the Ticino painter, and the Church of San Fedele houses frescoes by Joseph Birò. From the summit, enjoy 360-degree views over Lake Lugano, the Valais and Bernese Alps, and on a clear day, Monte Rosa.

Tip! Swiss Travel Pass holders can enjoy ticket discounts, but the travel date must be used on one valid day (if holding a multi-day pass).

Bonus Experience: The Brè Art Trail

Monte Brè isn't just about the view — between the Suvigliana midway station and the summit runs a gentle 2.65km art trail, taking about an hour and suitable for all fitness levels.

The route winds through Brè village's open-air sculptures and installations, passes the Wilhelm Schmid Museum, then climbs the "Scalinata alla Torretta" stairway with sweeping views over the village and lake, before you take the funicular back down from the summit. For those wanting to go further, a roughly 2.5-hour hike descends through chestnut forest from Monte Brè all the way to the lakeside fishing village of Gandria, with information boards along the way.

What's a Funicular

A funicular is a cable-driven railway that hauls cars up and down steep inclines on rails.

Mechanism: It operates on a counterbalance principle—two cars are attached to opposite ends of a single cable passing through a pulley at the top of the slope. As one car descends, its weight helps pull the other car up.

Key Difference from Cable Cars: Unlike aerial cable cars, a funicular always runs on ground tracks like a traditional train, but relies entirely on external cable traction rather than an onboard engine.
