The Czech Rail Pass is valid for travel on routes operated by the national railway company CD (www.cd.cz), as well as private railways operated by Leo Express and RegioJet. The Czech Republic is home to around 2,000 castles, fortresses, and historic ruins. The country is divided into two main regions: Bohemia in the west and Moravia in the east.
While often overlooked, the Czech Republic also produces excellent wine, especially in South Moravia, which is also known as the country’s Silicon Valley. Brno, the second-largest city, is located in this region.
Interestingly, there are two ossuaries (Bone Churches) in the country: one in Kutná Hora and another in Brno.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the top spots are Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) Protected Landscape Area and the Bohemian Switzerland National Park on the Czech-German border. Liberec and the surrounding areas in Bohemian Switzerland are particularly famous for their dramatic rock formations.
Fun fact: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the designer of the iconic Barcelona chair, also designed the Tugendhat Chair for Villa Tugendhat, a UNESCO-listed site in Brno.
