FAQs

Can I seat myself in a restaurant?

Generally, no. Even in casual-looking cafes, make eye contact with a staff member and ask, "A table for two, please?" Seating yourself is often considered rude. In crowded local spots, you might be asked to "share a table"—this is normal, though you may politely decline.

Why do the servers look so grumpy? Is it me?

Not at all. This is a common misunderstanding. Czech service focuses on "efficiency," not "enthusiasm." They believe constant interruptions like "How is everything?" are intrusive. If you need something (like the bill), raise your hand to signal them. They aren't ignoring you; they are waiting for your cue.

Is it true that I must greet everyone?

Yes, it's a sign of civility. Whether entering a small boutique, a guesthouse elevator, or boarding a bus with the driver, always say "Dobrý den". When leaving, say "Na shledanou" (Goodbye). Staying silent is often perceived as arrogant or ill-mannered.

What is the best way to get around the city?

Use apps for taxis. Avoid hailing cabs on the street in tourist hotspots like Prague's Old Town to avoid "tourist prices." Use Uber or Bolt for transparent pricing. For long-distance transfers (like Telč to CK), have your hotel book a reputable private shuttle.
