Salt has always been the "white gold" of the Salzkammergut. Today’s hike follows the historic brine pipeline—the oldest in the world—which once transported salt water from the Hallstatt mines to the Bad Ischl salt works. Your journey begins with a stroll through the Kaltenbachau, a historic site once famous for imperial horse racing, picnics, and high-society gatherings.

Continue along the Brine Pipeline Trail toward Bad Goisern, the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt. After enjoying the easy woodland paths, take a short, scenic train ride from Bad Goisern to the world-famous village of Hallstatt.

Hallstatt

As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Hallstatt is celebrated as one of the most beautiful villages in the world. Nestled between towering mountains and a serene lake, it is famous for its colorful alpine houses and ancient salt mines. Whether strolling through its charming alleys or gazing at the iconic church spire, Hallstatt offers a timeless, postcard-perfect experience.

History enthusiasts shouldn't miss the Hallstatt Salt Mine, the oldest in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you can dive deep into the region’s ancient mining legacy. For breathtaking views, head up to the Skywalk—a panoramic viewing platform suspended 350 meters above the town, offering a bird’s-eye view of the lake and surrounding peaks.

If you prefer to stay on foot, Hallstatt offers a variety of hiking trails ranging from gentle lakeside strolls to challenging mountain treks. For photography lovers, a visit to the Hallstatt Railway Station is a must; its elegant architecture, combined with the lake and mountain backdrop, provides one of the most iconic photo opportunities in the region.

Salzwelten Hallstatt

Visit the world's oldest salt mine, boasting over 7,000 years of history. This iconic mine is one of the core reasons why UNESCO designated Hallstatt as a World Heritage site.
