Day 2 Golden Circle & South Coast
Expand

We start by visiting the Golden Circle attractions including the historic Þingvellir National Park, home to one of the world’s first democratic parliaments. This place is also a
geological wonder, it is here that two great tectonic plates have slowly drifted apart, creating a rift valley.

This is truly a sight not to be missed. You will see the sensational Gullfoss waterfall, feeling the spray in the air as the great torrent of glacial water, sourced at Langjökull glacier, powers through the falls. You will witness anerupting geyser at Geysir, and you never have to wait long. Strokkur, the most active geyser, erupts every few minutes.

Continuing our journey, we'll visit the two most iconic waterfalls on the south coast: the distinctively different yet equally captivating Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Skógafoss waterfall. Seljalandsfoss is known as ‘the waterfall you can walk behind,’ and Skógafoss is mysterious, vigorous, and graceful, the cascade dropping
into the calm river below.

We'll stop in Vík, the southernmost village in Iceland, famous for its black sand beaches, high cliffs, and pretty church. We'll also visit Reynisfjara Beach, known for its black sand, basalt columns, and sea stacks, with fascinating folklore about trolls turned to stone.

Drangey island is home to a variety of seabirds, including puffins, and each spring, locals traditionally harvest seabird eggs from the island. FAQs

What will the average driving per day be?

We drive on average around 300 km (186 miles) per day on our multi-day tours. You will be spending approximately 4-5 hours in the car each day. We do of course stop on multiple locations throughout the tour for sightseeing, activities, bathroom breaks and lunch stops.

What is my luggage allowance on a multi-day tour?

For multi-day tours, each participant is allowed to bring a small backpack and 1 piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs). If you have more or heavier luggage with you, you will need to book storage for the surplus luggage before you arrive, there is a small fee for using this facility.

Do I need crampons for this tour?

If you're visiting during winter, typically from mid-October to mid-April, we highly recommend using lightweight crampons (also called ice spikes) for added safety on icy paths while sightseeing.

Pre-Departure Tips

Accommodation & Meals

You will stay at hand-picked country hotels and guesthouses chosen for comfort and convenient locations along the route. Due to limited rural availability, accommodations may vary by departure and can be in small towns or remote countryside areas.

All accommodations provide comfortable rooms, made beds, towels, free Wi-Fi, and daily breakfast buffets. Hair dryers are available on request.

Breakfast is included and typically features bread, cereals, fruit, eggs, cheese, cold cuts, yogurt, and Icelandic Skyr.

Lunch and dinner are flexible and at your own choice, available at gas stations, cafes, hotels, or local restaurants. In rural areas, dinner is often taken at the hotel, with menus highlighting fresh seafood and Icelandic lamb. Please inform us in advance of any dietary requirements; most needs can be accommodated, though rural options may be limited.

Activities

Hiking

Enjoy easy-paced hikes and short walks to waterfalls, geothermal areas, and natural landmarks. Some paths include lava terrain or soft ground. Waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

Glacier Hiking

Walk on Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier, with professional guides and provided safety gear. You’ll explore ice formations, crevasses, and moulins. Proper hiking boots are required; bring warm layers, waterproof gear, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Whale Watching

A 3-hour whale watching tour from Dalvik explores Eyjafjoreur fjord, with a 98% sighting success rate. Whales, dolphins, and other marine life are commonly seen. Warm overalls, hot drinks, and a traditional snack are provided, with optional sea angling and freshly grilled catch.

Weather & Daylight

Iceland’s climate is mild for its latitude but highly changeable, adding to the adventure. Daylight varies greatly by season, from near 24-hour daylight in summer to fewer but beautifully lit hours in winter. Your itinerary is planned to make the best use of daylight, with flexibility for changing conditions.

Northern Lights

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are best seen between September and March on clear, dark nights. Staying in the countryside gives you excellent opportunities to search for the aurora near your accommodation whenever conditions allow.

Clothing & Footwear

We recommend the 3-layer system: thermal base layer, insulating mid layer, and windproof/waterproof outer layer. Choose lightweight, flexible pieces suitable for changing conditions.

Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are strongly recommended and required for glacier hiking due to crampons. Boots can be rented if needed.
