Brienz Rothorn Steam Cogwheel Train

This is a one-hour journey that transcends time. Aboard a vintage steam cogwheel train that has been in operation since 1892, you will ascend from the serene shores of Lake Brienz (566m) to the majestic summit of Mt. Rothorn (2244m). This 7.6 km track is more than just a railway; it is Switzerland’s most soul-stirring trail of crimson.

Embark on a nostalgic steam journey traversing a 1,678meter elevation gain. 

The scenic route unfolds from Brienz (566m) via Planalp (1,314m) to the majestic Rothorn Summit (2,244m).

Technical Marvels & On-Board Experience :The Route: Pass through 6 mystical mountain tunnels. A single one-way trip consumes approximately 350kg of coal and generates 2,000 liters of steam. 

Enjoy the panoramic restaurant and spacious terrace overlooking the Alps. 

• Steam Sausage Service: A unique tradition every Wednesday at 10:00, where sausages are cooked by the engine's steam. 
• Salon Carriage: Exclusive "Salon Rouge" dining experiences are available on select dates (approx. 260 CHF per person, reservation required).

• Brienz – Rothorn (Full Route to Summit) : June 6, 2026 – October 25, 2026

  The journey to the summit takes approximately 60 minutes.
• Departures from Brienz: approx. 08:36 to 16:36
• Departures from Rothorn: approx. 09:38 to 17:40
