Rothorn is one of the three major mountain excursion points in Zermatt ( along with Gornergrat and Glacier Paradise ). The route includes a combination of a cogwheel train through a tunnel and a mountain cable car.
It is best known for the 5 Lakes Trail, which goes from Blauherd to Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee, Leisee, and ends at Sunnegga.
The round trip can be completed in under five hours at a leisurely pace ( not including time for photography stops along the way ).

Operating Dates:
October 6–31, 2025: Only Zermatt – Sunnegga section in operation
To purchase discounted tickets (STS), you must hold a valid Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card. Otherwise, full fare must be paid locally.
Where to Start the 5 Lakes Hike:
Take the cable car from Zermatt to Sunnegga. Begin your hike at Blauherd, and finish at Sunnegga.
Best value ticket: One-way from Zermatt to Blauherd and one-way back from Sunnegga to Zermatt.

With a mountain pass issued by Feida Travel or a valid Swiss Travel Pass, you may ride both the Red and Green Zermatt shuttle buses for free.

§ Inform your travel consultant of your preferred travel date when purchasing
§ Exchange tickets at Sunnegga–Rothorn base station, 10 minutes on foot from Zermatt station
§ In case of bad weather preventing ascent, you may change the date at the cable car station or request the staff to annotate the voucher as "unused due to weather" for a refund after your return (15% fee applies)
§ Cable car does not operate year-round; confirm schedule in advance.
