Most Popular Route

The most common route goes from Bergen to Oslo, but you can also start and end in Oslo, Bergen, Flåm, or Voss.

🚆 Bergen Railway
From Bergen to Myrdal — one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys, passing through mountain plateaus and dramatic scenery.

🚞 Flåm Railway
Runs between Flåm and Myrdal for about 20 km, descending from 866 m above sea level to the fjord at Flåm (2 m) in just one hour. One of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world, with views of waterfalls, gorges, and mountain scenery along the way.

⛴ Fjord Cruise
Sails through Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, passing dramatic fjord scenery shaped by glaciers. At its narrowest point, the fjord is only 250 meters wide and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

🚌 Bus Ride
Runs between Gudvangen and Voss, passing through dramatic valleys and mountain scenery with views of waterfalls, rivers, and steep cliffs along the way. It connects the Nærøyfjord cruise with the Bergen Railway.

How to choose?

  • Travel Duration: Oslo → Bergen
    • Train Oslo – Myrdal (5h)
    • Flåmsbana mountain railway Myrdal – Flåm (1h)
    • Cruise Flåm – Gudvangen (2h)
    • Scenic bus Gudvangen – Voss (1h)
    • Train Voss – Bergen (1h)

  • Choose your starting point: Oslo to Bergen (or reverse direction), Bergen round trip, Oslo round trip, etc. Or whether to make stopovers in Flåm/Voss, etc.
    • Oslo → Bergen (East to West)
This is the most popular direction among travelers. The scenery gradually unfolds from Norway’s largest urban plains, rising through mountain plateaus before descending into the dramatic fjords. The journey ends in the UNESCO-listed city of Bergen, offering a perfect finale to the trip.
    • Bergen → Oslo (West to East)
The distance is the same, but this direction is more flexible. If you stay in Flåm or Voss, you can continue back to Oslo without an early start from Oslo.
    • Round-trip Options

      Bergen round-trip:
A classic one-day trip from Bergen. Travel by train, fjord cruise, and bus to see Norway's beautiful valleys, waterfalls, and fjords—all in one day.
      (Bergen → Myrdal → Flåm → Nærøyfjord → Gudvangen → Voss → Bergen)

      Oslo round-trip:
About 24 hours in total. The trip usually ends with an overnight train, arriving back in Oslo the next morning.
      (Oslo → Myrdal → Flåm → Voss → Oslo)

  • Other starting points
You can also start from Flåm or Voss, or split the trip into several days with overnight stays. This makes the journey more flexible and relaxed.
  • Choose the sequence of taking the mountain railway, cruise, and bus.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?

  • During the peak season (June–August), popular services such as the Bergen Railway, Flåm Railway, and fjord cruises can sell out quickly. We recommend booking 1–3 months in advance to secure your preferred dates and travel times.

Classic Highlights & UNESCO World Heritage Sites

  • Nærøyfjord
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the narrowest and most dramatic branches of the Sognefjord (only about 250 meters wide at its narrowest point). It is surrounded by steep mountains rising up to 1,700 meters, making it one of Norway’s most iconic fjord landscapes.

  • Sognefjord
The longest and deepest fjord in Norway, often called the “King of the Fjords.” It offers stunning views of valleys, mountains, and small villages along the way.

  • Kjosfossen Waterfall
A short stop on the Flåm Railway where visitors can experience the powerful waterfall up close.

  • Flåm Village
A small fjord village surrounded by mountains and water. It is an important hub for fjord cruises and train connections, with a charming Nordic atmosphere.

Seasonal Scenery?

This destination can be visited year-round, with each season offering a distinctly different natural landscape.

  • Spring (April–May): As the snow gradually melts, waterfalls reach their peak flow, bringing renewed life to the valleys and fjords.

  • Summer (June–August): Mild temperatures and long daylight hours create lush green scenery, making this the most popular travel season.

  • Autumn (September–October): Forests transform into shades of gold and orange, creating rich layers of color, while visitor numbers are generally lower.

  • Winter (November–March): Snow-covered fjords and mountains create a fairy-tale setting, and there may be opportunities to witness the Northern Lights during certain periods.

Seasonal Activity

  • Kjosfossen Red-Clad Spirit performance: This performance is only held during the summer season (around May to September). In winter, the waterfall may be frozen, and the performance does not take place.

What should I do if trains are cancelled?

  • In bad weather such as heavy rain or snow, trains between Oslo and Myrdal may sometimes be cancelled. If this happens, replacement buses are usually provided. If you booked through Gofederal, please contact our customer service or your travel consultant. We will help you in Chinese.

Travel Reminder

  • The Norway in a Nutshell®route passes through both mountains and fjords, so weather and temperatures can change a lot in one day. We recommend bringing a windproof, waterproof jacket and dressing in layers.
  • In summer (around Jun–Sep), Norway has long daylight hours, making it ideal for enjoying the scenery along the route. In winter (around Nov), daylight is much shorter and the sun sets at around 3:00 pm. If you choose a one-day trip, the second half of the journey may take place after dark, so it’s best to check the schedule in advance.
