How do rail passes work in Europe?

Last updated:2025/08/27

Most train stations in Europe don’t have gates or turnstiles, and you won’t find entry scanners like in Taiwan’s MRT or high-speed rail systems. You simply board the train with your ticket or rail pass, and present it when a conductor comes around for inspection.

How ticket inspection works in Europe:

  • No entry gates at platforms: You can freely enter and exit the platform — no one checks at the station.
  • Onboard inspection: Conductors walk through the train and check tickets or rail passes. If a reservation is required, they’ll also check your seat reservation.
  • No ticket = heavy fine: If you're caught without a valid ticket, you’ll be fined — and there’s usually no option to pay on the spot or buy a ticket later.

Different from Taiwan:

  • No entry/exit scanners or ticket gates
  • No automatic fare deduction, even with e-tickets

! Note: Some stations in certain countries may have simple scanners or barriers at times. Just show your valid QR code and you’re good to go.
