Do panoramic trains in Switzerland require seat reservations?

Last updated:2025/08/28

Most trains in Switzerland—including regional and intercity services—do not require advance seat reservations. With a valid Swiss Travel Pass or point-to-point ticket, you can simply board and sit in any available seat.

However, some panoramic trains do require or recommend seat reservations in advance:

| Panoramic Trains That Require Reservations

  • Glacier Express
  • Bernina Express
  • Gotthard Panorama Express
  • GoldenPass Express (GPX): Montreux – Interlaken

| Panoramic Trains With Recommended Reservations

While not mandatory, it’s a good idea to reserve seats on certain panoramic trains (or on popular routes and peak times) to ensure seating availability and sit together with your travel companions. For example:

  • Luzern–Interlaken Express (LIX)
  • GoldenPass Belle Époque: Montreux – Zweisimmen
