If you've seen a photo online of a red Swiss train crossing a soaring stone arch bridge, backed by deep green valleys, chances are it was taken at the Landwasser Viaduct.

This bridge is the signature stretch of the Albula Line, and one of the highlights of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes route. Plenty of travelers cross it on the Bernina Express, but few actually get off, walk to a viewpoint, and capture the classic shot for themselves.

This guide covers 3 ways to do exactly that, so you're not just passing through, you're actually seeing this bridge up close.

Getting There: Start in Filisur

Whichever angle you're after, everything starts in the small station town of Filisur. It's about a 40-minute train ride from Chur, or roughly 1 hour from St. Moritz, with frequent departures. Swiss Travel Pass or Eurail Pass holders can board directly, no reservation needed. Once you arrive, it's worth checking the timetable at the station, especially for trains running between Filisur and Tiefencastel, since that's what determines whether you can time your visit to catch the red train crossing the bridge.

Which of the 3 Viewpoints Should You Pick?

North Viewpoint: Schmitten

A newly opened route as of 2025, reached via the Landwasser Shuttle, a small connecting train running between Filisur, Schmitten, and Alvaneu, stopping along the way at the north viewpoint of Landwasser Viaduct (pictured below). Free for Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, and Eurail Pass holders, though it does use up one travel day, so check the shuttle schedule before you head out. South Viewpoint: Acatos

The most popular option. It's about a 20-minute walk from Filisur station, along an easy, scenic trail, ideal if you're not in a rush and want to take your time and enjoy the views along the way. This is also the least demanding of the three, as shown below. Google Maps location

The View From Below

For a rarer, upward angle, transfer in Filisur to the Landwasser Express, a small tourist shuttle (not a regular train service). Round-trip tickets run about CHF 15 for adults and CHF 7 for children, payable on board. Not covered by rail passes or the Half Fare Card.

Tips for Getting the Shot

Timing is everything if you want the classic "red train on the stone bridge" shot. Check the SBB app or station timetable for trains running between Filisur and Tiefencastel, and arrive at your chosen viewpoint 10 to 15 minutes early. The south trail has the best scenery and the most room to take your time. Shuttles to the north viewpoint run less often, so confirm the schedule before you go to avoid a wasted trip.
