Tips for Visiting Jungfraujoch – Do I Need a Reservation?

Last updated:2025/12/09

Visiting Jungfraujoch – the "Top of Europe" – is one of the most popular activities in Switzerland. With an altitude of 3,454 meters, the snowy mountain views are breathtaking. Because of the high altitude and multiple transfers, here are some key reminders before your trip:

1. Do I need a reservation?

You can reserve the final ascent segment (Grindelwald Terminal or Kleine Scheidegg → Jungfraujoch) in advance.

  • Reservations guarantee boarding and you won’t miss the train.
  • The Jungfrau Railway provides guaranteed seating, but there are no assigned seats. Arrive early to get a good spot.

2. How long should I stay at the summit?

Recommended stay is about 2–3 hours to visit the Ice Palace, observation decks, Alpine panorama walkway, and outdoor snow platforms. If having lunch at the summit, plan for extra time.

Because of the high altitude and thin air, longer stays can be tiring. Plan enough rest for the return trip.

3. Altitude sickness precautions:

Some people may feel mild dizziness or shortness of breath. Suggestions:

  • To reduce impact, take the traditional train via Kleine Scheidegg for a slower ascent rather than the Eiger Express.
  • Move slowly at first and avoid running.
  • Drink water, avoid going on an empty stomach, and bring some candy or chocolate.

4. Clothing recommendations:

Even in summer, temperatures can approach 0°C or snow may occur.

Suggested clothing:

  • Layered clothing (warm jacket + windbreaker + base layers)
  • Non-slip shoes or sneakers suitable for walking on snow
  • Sunglasses and a hat for wind protection and sun protection; also reduces discomfort from snow glare

5. Check the weather before departure:

  • Jungfraujoch often has clouds or fog, reducing visibility.
  • Check live cams on the morning of your trip before deciding to proceed.
  • Note: From May to August, reservations for the final segment are mandatory. Without a reservation, you cannot access the summit. It’s recommended to plan ahead and allow flexibility.

6. Photo spots and activities:

  • Ice Palace, snow platforms, observation decks, Alpine panorama, and photo opportunities.
  • If the weather permitting, you can also play in the snow, build snowmen, or try some paid activities.
  • Remember to keep your phone and camera warm; extreme cold may cause battery drain.
